Vineyard

We believe great wine is made in the vineyard, and so we pay close attention to every detail that goes into making our wine. This starts with site, variety and clone selection.

Montalto started with 30 acres under vine at our home site, and as we became more closely connected to other sites through our vineyard contracting service we discovered new sites, offering varieties that we didn't grow, sites that were distinctive to ours offering the opportunity to explore the effect that varying sites and clones have on the Mornington Peninsula keynote varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

We are blessed with a long term and committed group of vineyard staff led by long-time vineyard manager Geoff Clarke. They understand the nuances of the vines, our sites and ensure we grow the best fruit possible in a given year.

WINE

Montalto produces wine on the Mornington Peninsula, a beautiful region with undulating hills flattening out to sea on three sides. Its natural topography and mild climate provide for ideal growing conditions for the key varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

We are focussed on producing wine with a sense of place. That is, wine that is a true expression of the vineyard or block from which it was harvested, of its terroir.  Our home estate of 30 acres under vine offers North and South facing aspects and is the primary source for our wine range.  Carefully selected sites leased and managed by Montalto offer sub regional, varietal and clonal distinction explored through our Single Vineyard range.

Montalto practices sustainable viticulture under the guided hand of Geoff Clarke, long term viticulturalist at Montalto. Hand tended, well balanced vines are the keys to providing the best possible fruit in a particular vintage, from a particular block. No irrigation and a reduced reliance on sprays play their part. Hand harvesting at the perfect time ensure the wine reaches the winery in peak condition.

Meticulous and considered wine making from Simon Black allows the fruit to sing for itself - small parcels of fruit, low sulphurs, wild yeast fermentation, and natural malolactic fermentation.

The result is wine that we feel very proud of, and that is receiving critical and popular acclaim. We hold the Five Red Star rating, the highest rating possible in James Halliday's Wine Companion.

We are also dedicated to wine education, both within our staff and for the visitor. We are blessed with a stable, skilled and knowledgeable cellar door team, many of who have experience in the vineyards and/or winery. Our aim is to engage you in as little or as much wine knowledge as suits you at the time you visit us. We also run free monthly wine education sessions, our First (Wine) Sunday series, which are held on the first Sunday of each month.

As we are not a large producer, our wine is sold almost exclusively from the estate. You might find us on the lists at selected restaurants, and at one or two premium wine stores in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Hopefully you can come and visit us, but if not you may want to consider the benefits of becoming a Cellar Club member or just order it online!
